Challenging Drug Under Development
Situation:
A small biotechnology company was developing a complex pre-charged peptide-like drug for treating a rare form of muscular dystrophy. They had no analytical facilities, and no methods for analyzing the drug in biological samples, which needed to include both plasma and muscle specimens.
Action:
Samples of the drug were sent to NMS Labs for evaluation.
Results:
Scientists at NMS Labs, using high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry, helped the biotechnology company realize that initial synthetic batches of this complex drug were actually synthesized incorrectly, and that the wrong compound had been made. After the compound was properly synthesized, NMS Labs scientists developed methods for accurately measuring this drug in both plasma and muscle. NMS Labs subsequently measured the levels of this drug, both as total drug and as the individual diastereomers in several thousand samples. « Return to Research Case Summaries
